Nevada bankruptcies

With the fiscal year ending September 30, 2009 Nevada led the nation in bankruptcy filings. Nationally the rate of bankruptcies filed was 4.52 per 1000 people. In Nevada that rate jumped to 10.49 per 1000 people.

Last year, Nevada placed a dubious second in the number of bankruptcies filed. And unfortunately, the pace of Nevada bankruptcies increased this past year for a total of 27,560 total filings.

While the numbers are huge, they are also not completely unpredictable. Nevada's unemployment rate rose from just under 8% last year to 13% this year.

On another front, Trans Union (a credit reporting agency) stated that Nevada leads the nation in credit card delinquencies, as of the 3rd quarter 2009.

Tourism to hot spots like Las Vegas have seen a dramatic decreases in business as consumers have found themselves faced with less spending money for extracurricular spending activities like travel. Nevada relies heavily upon tourism and once those numbers bounce back employment is likely to see improvement.
